Isabella Rossellini - What the Duck…
Okay, I feel like we know each other well enough now so I’m going to be hands-on-heart honest with you. It wasn’t Maya Angelou who inspired this blog theme. It wasn’t Nelson Mandela or Malala Yousafzai who made me think that actually the human race is worth saving after all. It wasn’t Nina Simone or Freda Kahlo who made me worried that computers, when they finally take over, aren’t going to properly appreciate the human species in all its full dizzying variety. No. It was Isabella Rossellini. And what’s more, it was Isabella Rossellini pretending to be a duck.
I think it must have been a dull day that day when I stumbled on Isabella Rossellini dressed up as a duck (no idea, but shall we, just for now, since you’re asking, assume I was casually surfing about the bulrushes of the internet. ‘Wait! What do we have here? Is it Baby Moses? No, it’s Isabella Rossellini flirting with a horny papier-mâché drake.’)

But I have to say, what the sight of Isabella Rossellini dressed up as a duck simulating sex with a cardboard drake did to me that dull day was make my jaw fall open. And made me truly glad to be human again.
This is Ingrid Bergman’s daughter we’re talking about here. She’s gorgeous and sophisticated and has had a very respectable career as model and actress. Who can forget her roles in Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart? But, still, it wasn’t until I watched her dressed as a duck that I realised just how much she cares about animals.
And not just the big show-offy ones but all of them - the bee, the fly, the earthworm, the limpet, prawn, anglerfish, hamster, snail, barnacle…
Educationally worthwhile and surreally silly – I can’t think of a better way than whiling away 10 minutes of your life browsing through Rossellini’s Green Porno oeuvre. You come away wiser and with a daft look on your face. And what more could you ask for from a human?
